Some prostitutes don't like how they're portrayed in movies. But instead of taking it lying down, they're getting in on the act -- with their own film festival.
The 3rd San Francisco Sex Worker Film And Video Festival takes place May 23-26 and features nearly 50 films that are either about the sex industry or made by sex workers themselves.
For instance, there's a documentary about transgendered immigrant prostitutes in Italy as well as educational films about vulva massage.
According to festival organizer Carol Leigh, there are also a lot of films this year that combine housework and sexuality and quite a bit of feminist pornography.
Although Leigh admits much of the sex worker cinema is titillating, she says the festival's real mission is pointing out the link between prostitution and the arts.
